New York Minute is a data visualization created using p5.js.
This was an assignment for my Critical Computation class at Parsons. We were tasked with making an experimental clock that measured time in an unconventional way.
My clock, measures the passage of time by visualizing the amount of people who text "I love you" to someone in New York per second. The saying "...in a New York minute" is used to describe something that happens
in an instant, or a very brief span of time. The saying is also used with a bit of inpatiance, much like many New Yorkers. New York can be a lonely place, so receiving one of those texts or sending one, can make all the difference in someone's life. This idea of measuring the passage of time through texts isn't new—in fact, thousands of people pass their time by reading; however, I do believe that measuring time by text messages, specifically "I love yous" is a quite novel idea of tracking time.
